Advanced techniques to address your unique needs
At Forte Sports & Orthopaedic Physiotherapy, we offer a range of specialized treatment techniques that complement our core physiotherapy services. These evidence-based treatments can help accelerate healing, reduce pain, and improve your overall outcomes when used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
IMS/Dry Needling
Dry needling or Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) is a technique used to treat muscular pain and tightness. It involves inserting thin, solid acupuncture needles into a tight band of tissue called a trigger point.
How It Works
The therapist will gently move the needle around to help release the trigger point before removing the needle. During the treatment, you may experience a small twitch or cramping sensation–this may be mildly uncomfortable during the treatment but will resolve once the needle is removed.
After Treatment
It is normal to experience some mild muscle soreness for the next 24-48 hours after a session, but this should quickly resolve and lead to noticeable improvements in your muscle pain and tightness.

Shockwave Therapy
Radial Shockwave Therapy (RSWT) is a non-invasive treatment used to treat musculoskeletal conditions- especially those of the muscle, tendon and fascia. It involves the application of high-energy sound waves to the tissues via a handheld device.
How It Works
These soundwaves trigger a healing response in the body by increasing circulation and metabolic activity (i.e. stimulating cells responsible for tissue repair).

Cupping
Cupping is a technique adapted from traditional alternative medicine practices to help increase circulation and remove toxins from the tissues. It is commonly used by Acupuncturists and Physiotherapists to help manage pain, increase blood flow to optimize healing and help release muscle tension.
How It Works
During treatment, the therapist will place silicone cups on your skin to create a vacuum (suction). The cups can then be moved around to provide relief to larger areas or remain in place to localize treatment.
After Treatment
Following the treatment, you may have circular bruising and tenderness around the skin where the cups were placed, this is normal and will likely resolve within a few days to a week.
Common Questions About Our Specialty Treatments
Are these treatments painful?
While some treatments like IMS/dry needling may cause mild discomfort during the procedure, most patients find the discomfort minimal and well worth the relief they experience afterward. Shockwave therapy can also cause mild discomfort during treatment, but the intensity is always adjusted to your comfort level. Cupping typically creates a sensation of tightness or pressure, but is rarely painful.
Are these treatments covered by insurance?
Most extended health benefit plans cover these treatments when they're provided by a registered physiotherapist as part of your overall treatment plan. We direct bill most major insurance providers for your convenience. Contact our clinic for specific details about your coverage.
How do I prepare for these treatments?
For most treatments, no special preparation is needed. Wear comfortable clothing that allows access to the treatment area. Stay well-hydrated before and after your appointment. For IMS/dry needling, it's best to eat a light meal 1-2 hours before your appointment to reduce the risk of feeling lightheaded.
